2025.1.18

The Hong Kong News-Expo celebrated its sixth anniversary today (18th January) and invited Mr Paul Lam Ting-kwok, Secretary for Justice of the HKSAR to officiate the event. Mr John Lee Ka-chiu, Chief Executive of the HKSAR, also delivered a congratulatory message via video and celebrated the sixth anniversary of the Hong Kong News-Expo with nearly a hundred guests on-site.

In his message, Chief Executive Mr John Lee emphasised that the Hong Kong News-Expo bears an important responsibility, showcasing the history and development of the Hong Kong journalism industry and highlighting the significant role of free press in the development of Hong Kong as an international metropolis. He also hoped that the media would continue to leverage its professionalism to cover on beneficial measures and new developments of Hong Kong. In light of digitalisation and shifting operational environments, he stated, “Professional journalists should proactively identify changes, adapt, and innovate. I believe that they possess the capability, determination, and vision to improve and innovate as long as they uphold their professional values and integrity.”

Mr Eric Chan Cho-biu, board member of the Hong Kong News-Expo, stated in his speech, “the News-Expo opened on 5 December, 2018 and has reached its sixth anniversary in the blink of an eye. I would like to express my sincere gratitude to all our news industry partners and the various organisations, businesses, government departments and members of the public who have supported us. In 2024, the News-Expo has welcomed over 37,000 visitors, which is a 23% increase compared to 2023. We have also strengthened our efforts in encouraging schools to organise student visits and attend our media and information literacy workshops, as well as arranging various training courses, which have received an overwhelming number of responses. Every year, we organise a student competition to encourage students to improve their media and information literacy in the form of writing or painting. Looking ahead, the Hong Kong News-Expo will strive to attract more local and overseas visitors and enhance the media and information literacy of the general public.”

Mr Chan further added that, the News-Expo has closely followed the pulse of the society over the past six years and updated the exhibitions regularly to give visitors a fresh experience every time. “Last year, we held the ‘In Memory of a Master Photojournalist – Chan Kiu’, displaying classic images taken by him and the stories behind, to enhance public understanding of Hong Kong’s history. The ‘Our Mental Health’ thematic exhibition held last September aimed to raise awareness on mental health issues and offer ways to seek help. Additionally, we updated the news photographs by the staircase to our first floor, featuring giant pandas, drone performance and Olympic athletes, among others. News-Expo also holds public talks regularly, inviting various experts to be our speakers and improving the public’s understanding on relevant topics.
